Estuaries are places where fresh and salt water meet and mix. Back Bay or Upper Newport Bay is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California. Approximately 200 species of birds, including several endangered species, are found here. There are also a variety of mammals, fish, and native plants. The Bay is an important stop for migrating birds along what is known as the Pacific Flyway. As many as 30,000 birds can be seen here on any day during the winter months. The above painting of Back Bay is a spring scene, featuring water fowl, one of the snaking and ever-changing streams, and bluffs in the background.
