Cabo San Lucas Sunset

This collection of Cabo San Lucas oil paintings was created by Steve Simon from photographs he took during a trip here on his first wedding anniversary. The scenes are thus not a comprehensive portfolio of sights in Cabo but rather a group of snapshots one might expect to see during a one-week stay in this beautiful town. The Cabo San Lucas pictures range from a still life of a casual lunch, to beautiful El Arco, to children playing with a dog on the beach, to Steve’s wife swinging in a hammock beneath a palapa hut. Together the images paint a picture of a place designed to with two things in mind—relaxation and recreation.

Cabo San Lucas is a city on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Together with San Jose del Cabo the two towns are popularly known as Los Cabos.

Cabo San Lucas enjoys warms waters and scenic beaches. It is also a sports fishing paradise, hosting the largest marlin tournament in the world. In the winter, pods of whales can be observed in the ocean where they bear their calves in the warm waters off Cabo. With these obviously attractive qualities to tourists, the Mexican government began in 1974 to invest in infrastructure to turn Cabo San Lucas into one of the most attractive centers for tourism in Mexico. Since then, steadily increasing numbers of foreign and Mexican vacationers have come to this cape at the end of the peninsula.

In the last three decades, Cabo San Lucas has become a very popular vacation and spa destination. Resort hotels, world-class golf courses, gated residential communities, and timeshares have sprung up along the twenty-mile coast between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. This ever increasingly chic stretch has become known as “the Corridor.” It is home to some of Latin America’s top resorts including: the Palmillla, Esperanza, and Las Ventanas.

The beautifully elegant natural arch at the tip of the cape is called El Arco de Cabo San Lucas. El Arco is without a doubt the most photographed local landmark. A particularly intriguing Cabo beach just up the peninsula from the arch is the fittingly named Lover’s Beach. Lover’s Beach is a romantic beach only accessible by boat but well worth the trip. Arriving on the calm east shore, visitors are treated to a narrow beach passage with scenic rocky crags to the north and south. A short walk on the sand to the west brings you to the Pacific coast and the decidedly more turbulent waters of the open ocean.

Besides the Los Cabos beach life, the area has developed an active nightlife and has also become a popular spring break destination. In 1990, rocker Sammy Hagar of Van Halen along with three other band members, opened a nightclub and restaurant called The Cabo Wabo Cantina. It still ranks as one of the more popular attractions in town. Other clubs in Cabo include El Squid Roe, Gigglin Marlin, The Jungle Bar, NoWhere Bar, Tiki bar, and The Zoo.

Thank you for visiting the Steve Simon online gallery and we hope you enjoy this collection of Cabo San Lucas art.
